Ingredients To Use And Avoid When Dealing With Acne

Are you finding yourself asking questions such as; ‘what are the causes of acne’? Or ‘how to get rid of body acne’? If you have found answers to those questions, I am pretty sure that the next thing concerning acne you are dying to learn about will be: what ingredients work for acne and spots and perhaps a list of product recommendations that will help you treat acne.

Preventive measures for acne are necessary and should be part of our daily lives but skincare solutions and acne treatments with active ingredients will also give you quick results and help you target those concerns.

The question is, “What are the products for acne that will work for me?” To answer this let's start by saying that there is no miracle product that works perfectly for everyone but there are definitely ingredients that are highly beneficial for treating acne.

No matter the location of your acne, if you have pimples there are certain things that you will have to keep in mind. Things like controlling excess oil and clogged pores, targeting bacteria, not forgetting about our other skin necessities and conditions, especially if we have sensitive skin.

Just as there are beneficial ingredients to treat acne, note that there are also ingredients that can amplify or even trigger it, like the following ones.

• Shea Butter: Pore clogging on acne-prone skin

• Coconut Oil: Pore clogging

• Vaseline: Extremely pore-clogging

• Certain Alcohols: Extremely drying and irritating on the skin

• Menthol: Drying, irritating, and causes inflammation

• Peppermint: Drying, irritating and causes inflammation

• Eucalyptus: Drying, and irritating which can result in irritation

These are just some of them, but with this short list, you can already go over to your vanity and check the ingredient list of the products you have. If you are currently using products that contain the ingredients above, discontinue doing so because that might be the reason why you haven’t seen any progress while treating your acne.

INGREDIENTS TO USE

When it comes to fighting acne, there are many ingredients that can be used to treat acne without overly drying the skin, but here are some of my favorite skin-saving ingredients to look for.

VITAMIN C

This powerful antioxidant is very underrated in terms of its ability to fight against acne. Commonly just known for its skin brightening abilities, when using a powerful vitamin c serum or a gentle serum on acne, it will still help exfoliate the skin, unclog pores, stimulate collagen to repair any damage, and all while brightening and fading acne scars.

Q. I have sensitive skin! How can I use Vitamin C in my routine?

A. If it is your first time using a vitamin c product, we recommend you mixing it with your moisturizer. Try adding one or two drops of the serum with your everyday moisturizer and use it as you normally would use your cream. This way, you will be able to see how your skin reacts to the ingredient without too much stimulation or irritation. But always remember to be aware of what ingredients you might not necessarily want to mix with vitamin C.

SODIUM HYALURONATE (HYALURONIC ACID)

When we think about acne fighters, we don’t always think about adding moisture to the skin. Instead, we might think just to exfoliate. Although exfoliating is good, adding the proper moisture helps fight acne bacteria from entering the skin in the first place! Using a hydrating toner or liquid not only makes the skin feel healthier and plump, but it also keeps the skin’s barrier strong, stopping acne bacteria from breaking in.

Q. What will be the best way to moisturize deeply without using too much product?

A. Layering toner or hydrating and lightweight serums will be the best way not only to prep your skin but also to hydrate well all layers of your skin. If your skin has become sensitive and is not in the mood for 5 to 10 products, try replacing some steps with an added layer of hydrating yet light toner.

GREEN TEA

Green tea is not just amazing to drink but used on the skin it is an excellent way to reduce acne! Green tea gently exfoliates away dead skin cells, while its natural soothing properties reduce inflammation, and help shrinking pimple size.

AHA, BHA, ESPECIALLY MANDELIC ACID

If you’ve done some research before, you might be familiar with these acids. Known for their ability to exfoliate away dead skin cells, fade acne scars, reduce oil production and reduce blackheads, using any one of these ingredients is a sure way to help improve acne!

Q. How often should I use this ingredient in my routine?

A. Let’s not forget that no matter how effective these ingredients are, they are still exfoliants. So, using them in your skincare routine is GREAT, but do not overdo it. You can change up how many times you use them according to your skin type but if you have sensitive skin, once a week can be enough for you.

CENTELLA ASIATICA

With adult acne, more often than not the cause can be linked to dryness and inflammation. This ingredient is an all-star in terms of skin repair and soothing! Centella can help reduce pimple size, calm irritation, fade acne scars, and repair damaged skin cells, resulting in clearer and healthier skin.

Q. When is the best time to use Centella Asiatica?

A. Adding this healing magical ingredient at night before you go to bed will help restore your skin while you sleep. However, whenever your skin feels irritated, inflamed, and damaged, you can add a layer of a Centella cream or spot treatment to help you with your skin emergency.

 CLAY

If you are struggling with excessive sebum production and clogged pores, this ingredient is a must. Clay is well known to draw out impurities and absorb excess oil on the surface of the skin. It also exfoliates, removing dead skin cells and build-up from the skin, it clogs pores and hello acne.

For those of you with sensitive skin, a clay mask might be a little too aggressive for you, but you can always introduce clay in other products such as soap, foams, or milder masks.
